Remember when Chicago and Detroit played the role as Hong Kong in Transformers: Age of Extinction?

Kinja'd!!!

Yeah, that happened. To be honest, they did a pretty decent job of replicating the typical Toyota Crown Comfort HK taxis to US-spec MX83 Toyota Cressidas (apart from the steering wheel position and 5mph bumpers).

After the cameras stopped rolling, the destroyed ones were left to rot. TTAC’s Crabspirits actually came across a junkyard filled with wrecked Cressidas thanks to Michael Bay.

However, some of the undamaged ones were left in the hands of a film-car storage company called Greenlight Industries. Obviously, some filmmakers rented out these lucky stunt props and put them in back on camera!

This is what browsing through the Internet Movie Car Database has led me to! This could also be a series, but I need suggestions!

That particular Cressida seemed to be able to drive away unscathed. However...

As a person from Hong Kong, the said “Hong Kong” in the movie made me cringe the whole time.

Hong Kong is RIGHT HAND DRIVE for crying out loud. The chase scenes with the CTS I can forgive, as it depicts the cars coming in from China which does happen, but the everything else...

Ran when parked, minor scuffs. No tire-kickers.

I’ve owned 4 mx83's over 15 years. I say crush and burn them all please. They are enticing, but will crush your soul after a while. Plus they look gross, much worse with age too.

Detroits great because you can destroy it and no one will notice the difference. Also there’s no one there to notice to the difference.

This is how I feel about movies that are supposed to be in Washington, DC but were clearly shot somewhere else. I grew up there and recognize the scenery. The two easiest giveaways:

1. No buildings are allowed to be built taller than the Washington Monument so whenever there’s a “Washington, DC” shot with tall buildings it’s a dead giveaway.

2. The Metro is a very distinctive looking subway and yet there are always random other cities’ subways used as stand-ins. Sometimes they at least try to make the insides of the trains look like the Metro, or the tile and signs in the stations, but the roofs of the stations are hard to replicate.

I saw the one in A Walk in the Woods and thought to myself “That’s a damn odd car to have as a taxi...”

Never made the connection.

All of those poor GTOs michael bay destroyed for the first transformers movie. It was bad enough they turned one GTO in a Camaro for the movie, but then they destroyed more.......

Seriously... they spent all that money on the CG, yet they can’t spend a wee bit more for attention to detail.
